Our Mahi
Russell Landcare Trust’s mahi are projects and programs aimed at protecting and enhancing the natural biodiversity of the Russell Peninsula.
PREDATOR FREE RUSSELL
This is a joint initiative with Northland Regional Council and Predator Free 2050 Ltd. aims to eliminate rats, possums and other pests from the 3,000-hectare Russell peninsula. This project is one of two Predator Free 2050 projects in the country targeting rats via handbaiting.
Native Habitat Restoration
Over its 20+ years, The Trust’s keen local volunteers have planted thousands upon thousands of native trees, shrubs and grasses in habitats ranging from wetlands to forests and beyond. Enhancing existing ecosystems and in some places re-establishing them!
Dune Restoration
For the past ten years, the Russell Landcare Trust in partnership with Northland Regional Council Coast Care, has been working with Russell residents and Russell Primary School students to restore the dunes at Oneroa, Long Beach through planting of native species.
Native Nursery
With over 700+ hours of preparing the site, 40+ volunteers, and the Russell Landcare Trust Native Nursery, the Russell Landcare Trust Native Nursery is now open and supporting the Habitat Restoration Strategy, reviving Russell’s natural ecosystems so native species can flourish.
