Kia ora, here’s our update for March!
The new season means adapting our trapping efforts to the change in season and predators on the move! Many landowners alerted us to sightings and a volunteer monitoring a trapline in the elimination zone found a rat! Because of this help we can focus our efforts on where they are most needed and make the biggest difference.
The buffer zone is working in keeping our elimination zones safe. This is a remarkable result that is closely being watched by other Predator Free groups around the motu.
If you see a rat, hedgehog, stoat or possum on or around your property, please report it by emailing us at contact@russelllandcare.org.nz
Here’s what’s been caught in 3,080 traps checks in March:
🦝 0 Possums in the elimination zone and 14 Possums in the buffer zone
🐀 Only 3 rats in Kororāreka/township! That is the lowest ever and rather unique for an urban environment.
🐀 5 rats caught overall in the elimination zone and 94 rats caught in the buffer zone
🦊 2 stoats caught in the elimination zone and 5 stoats in the buffer zone
