Janurary Monthly Update

by | Feb 2, 2026 | News, PFR Updates

Kia ora Russell Landcare Trust whānau,

2026 has officially arrived, and somehow we’re already over a month in? Time goes fast when you’re having fun (or checking 2,833 traps throughout January).

January also officially marked 24 months of no possum catches in Okiato/ Te Wahapu! A huge win for the Trust and for predator control in general. Thank you to all our trappers, behind-the-scenes team and of course, our volunteers and supporters. Without your hard mahi, these results wouldn’t be possible

BUFFER ZONE

There’s been a sharp intake of rats in the Buffer Zone, with 91 Ship Rats and 5 Norway Rats as well as 6 Possums. Showing the importance of continued predator control to ensure the Knockdown and Elimination Zones continue to succeed.

IN OTHER NEWS

🐀 Rats, possums and stoats are on the move! With catches doubling in the buffer zone, some may sneak through. Please double-check your traps, cameras and report any sightings to the Russell Landcare Trust

🌱 The end of January saw the Russell Landcare Trust officially open the Native Nursery at the Depot in Matauwahi Bay. The event was beautifully pulled together by the team, with live music, delicious home-baked goods and the local community coming together to mark the occasion. Check out our website page!

🌿 We’re putting out the call for volunteers, specifically for our shiny new nursery. If you’re interested in getting your hands dirty, please get in touch with Kerry or sign up for the nursery volunteers newsletter.

📝 The Trust is stoked to announce that our Habitat Restoration Strategy will be available for consultation by the end of the month! We’d love for you to get involved and have your say, so please keep an eye on your inbox or our socials for the announcement.
